Chapter 6

Hiding in her room, Rose packed a small bag of clothing and essentials and hid the bag in the wardrobe. She wanted to be ready the moment Riley instructed and did not want to be the cause of their delay. Her heart felt as if it had doubled in size. Never had she felt so elated. She didn’t care where Riley was taking her as long as it was far away from Kershire Castle.

The idea of journey and adventure sounded like a fairytale. One that she would soon live out. She felt like a child tasting a sweet for the very first time. So excited to leave, Rose realized that she had completely forgotten about eating all day. Her meal from lunch sat cold on a tray near her bed, untouched. But she was too excited to eat. The moment food entered her mind, her stomach grumbled. Walking over to the nightstand, she picked up the glass of water and began drinking as she glanced down at what the maids had served her. Upon the plate was a piece of dried venison smothered in brown gravy, a small bowl of red berries, and steamed vegetables.

Setting the glass down, Rose picked up a piece of meat, taking a small bite. It was tough to chew and the gravy had gone cold, but she managed to finish it anyway. Leaving the soggy-looking vegetables aside, she grabbed a few of the berries and placed them into the pocket of her skirt for later.

Before Rose left this place forever there was still one thing left she had to do; pen a letter to her parents. She would not tell them where she was going or with whom, but that she simply wished them well and to let them know that she was happy; for happiness is all a parent should want for their child just as they always had for her other siblings.

The youngest of five, Rose was the baby of the family. Treated as such, her older sisters dictated most of the rules and Rose was never allowed to make her own choices. Only her eldest sister, Marla, was given the choice to marry for love. As for her other sisters, the rest of them married out of obligation for the good of the clan.

Good of the clan. Rose scoffed as she remembered her father’s dry words. No good would come out of marrying Laird Ramsey. He was vile, arrogant, and deceitful. The man was the devil himself.

Rose quietly walked to her door and turned the handle carefully. With nothing to write her letter, she had to gather what she needed from the library. Cracking the door open just enough to poke her head out, she surveyed the hall, making sure it was empty. With no one in sight, she tiptoed down the hall to the library. Slipping through the door, she let out the breath she had been holding. She wanted to be quick about her task and get back to her room before anyone noticed she had gone.
